11 Plus Information
How to help your child at home
Encourage your child to read sections of a good quality newspaper and discuss the articles – focus on new words and phrases and what they mean.
Encourage daily watching of the news – BBC Newsround or general news reports – discuss their understanding of events in the world.
Select a book from the reading list or equivalent and encourage your child to read at least 30 minutes a day – spend 5 to 10 minutes discussing new vocabulary/unfamiliar ideas within the book shared.
Please ensure your child has access to a good dictionary and thesaurus – paper or electronic. New vocabulary should be explored by your child (looking for synonyms and building a vocabulary bank).
Children may wish to include these within their writing. Knowing all the multiplication tables fluently is vital to your child’s success in the mathematics paper. Practice any unfamiliar tables each day until they are fluent.
Draw up a daily schedule to support 11+ revision
Suggested timings: Reading – 30 minutes a day (use a dictionary/thesaurus to look up unfamiliar words and build a personal word bank)
Multiplication tables – 10 minutes a day
Writing (improve a sentence) – x10 minutes a day (use a dictionary/thesaurus and try to include new words from your child’s word bank)
.
The 11+ Club is a weekly club that promotes a range
of Life Skills moving forwards. Regular revision a form of exercise for the brain – helps to improve its memory and retention. Activities within the club are planned to support children’s independence and build confidence and stamina in reading, writing and maths. These skills are transferred into their daily learning at school and in future pathways that they may follow.
The 11+ examination is taken by children in their final year of primary school so that they can apply to a grammar school of
their choice. Most children taking the 11+ will experience formal examination conditions for the first time. At the 11+ club, we foster skills that will support children in completing the 11+ practice papers with confidence.
If your child is in year 5 and would like to join the 11+ Club, please email mrsalexander@darlinghurstacademy.org.uk for further details.
